He later became the 19th director of the Office of Management and Budget in 1970 and served as secretary of the treasury from June 1972 to May 1974, but then left government to become executive vice president of Bechtel Group, a large engineering and services company, in which he later served as president and a director. He was successful in life, in business and with family, said his son, Eric de Jong.
